PULSES
Türkiye is one of the most important components of the "Fertile Crescent" region, considered the genetic center for pulses such as lentils, beans, chickpeas, broad beans, kidney beans, peas, cowpeas, and rice. Among the most cultivated food pulses in Türkiye, chickpeas, dry beans, and lentils stand out. These pulses are grown in almost every region of our country and constitute the primary source of protein for Turkish cuisine, especially for families with low income.
Pulses represent a prominent group of products in the agricultural sector for several important reasons, including their contribution to employment, export potential, ease of cultivation, nutritional values, and their ability to enhance soil fertility. They also play a significant role in environmental protection and supporting agricultural sustainability. Türkiye is among the leading countries in the world in the production of lentils and chickpeas.
In Türkiye, the production of food pulses is mainly concentrated in the Southeastern Anatolia, Central Anatolia, and transitional regions, as well as the southern parts of the Marmara Region. Specifically, red lentils are grown in the Southeast, green lentils, chickpeas, and dry beans in Central Anatolia and transitional regions, while broad beans and peas are cultivated in the Aegean and Southern Marmara regions.
