OTHER VEGETABLE OILS

Vegetable oils are one of the fundamental nutrients for humankind, holding vital importance alongside proteins and carbohydrates. Additionally, these oils play a strategic role not only in the food industry but also in the energy, health, and cosmetic sectors. The rise of the biodiesel industry in recent years largely relies on the production of oilseed crops. At the same time, the grains of these plants, along with the meal and oil standards, are essential components in animal feed mixtures, thus playing a crucial role in the compound feed industry.

Among the most produced and traded oil crops worldwide are soybeans, canola, cottonseed, sunflower, peanut, safflower, palm kernel, coconut, sesame, flax, and poppy seeds. Corn oil, a by-product of corn, is also an important vegetable oil. Türkiye, due to its diverse climatic conditions, has the capacity to grow almost all oil plants except for coconut and palm kernel.

Globally and in Türkiye, oils derived from fruits such as olives and hazelnuts are significant sources of vegetable oil, but these products should be considered a separate sector. Commonly produced oilseed plants like sunflower, safflower, soy, canola, poppy, peanut, sesame, and castor are considered annual plants, while oil plants like olive, coconut, palm, and date palm are perennial plants.

In place of animal fats, which are high-cost and limited in resources, vegetable-based oils play a fundamental role in human nutrition. These oils are transformed into consumer products like liquid oils or margarine through natural, refined, or hydrogenation processes after their raw state. Furthermore, after the oilseeds are crushed, they are separated into crude oil and meal; the crude oil is refined for consumption, while the resulting meal is used as animal feed.
