SWEET CORN
Sweet corn, found among warm-climate cereals, is notable for its versatile use. This plant, evaluated for human nutrition and industrial raw materials, is also used as animal feed with its stalks and leaves. Additionally, it is consumed as a snack, utilized in paper production, and handcrafts. In recent years, the use of sweet corn in the feed, oil, sweetener industries, and the production of biofuel-bioethanol has increased.
In Türkiye, sweet corn yield generally varies between 700-1000 kg/da, while the global average is around 580 kg/da. The majority of sweet corn produced in our country is used in the feed sector, particularly preferred for poultry farming. The remaining part is evaluated for the starch-glucose industry, industrial use, and as seed.
The increase in sweet corn production is influenced by factors such as the use of high-yielding hybrid varieties, advancements in cultivation techniques, and support for grain and silage sweet corn. Worldwide, especially in the USA and other countries in the northern hemisphere that dominate sweet corn production, a stagnation has been observed recently. However, the increase in use for feed continues, and significant amounts of sweet corn are used in biofuel production. Nonetheless, the automotive industry's shift towards alternative energy sources could impact the use of agricultural products like sweet corn.
